The GP Unique
It's hard to find a hotter hatchback than the GP Unique. It features big intakes, a curved arch and a two part rear wing. These are features normally reserved for French unicorns.
Thankfully, the GP Unique doesn't just look mean; it also feels quick. The engine is smooth, powerful and its 332lb-ft torque is delivered with ease below 1,750rpm. It's also well matched with the smooth-shifting, six-speed automatic transmission. Mini is keen on lap times, and it's unfortunate that the GP Unique does not have an automatic transmission.
But it's not without faults. The GP Unique's passive suspension is sturdy but doesn't feel engaging. If you drive straight and smooth B road, you can easily push the chassis's limits of dynamic, however, it's a challenge to stay fluid with your inputs. The front end becomes somewhat snatchy, and the car is unable to maintain its position when under the stress of irregular British bumps.
Once you dial into the GP Unique, its handling is superb. Its emphatic front end and body control remind us of the JCW race car we tested last year. It's a blast to drive on a slippery road, and especially when you're in a good mood.
The car's chassis is also distinct from the regular MT-09, thanks to the fact that it has much more torsional rigidity and bigger axles. The new GP's 24.7 degrees of rake and 108mm trail feel more on the nose compared to the R6. But it also provides amazing stability when turning.
